2023 | Motion for Industry | Client Brief | Supervised by Nao Hayakawa

“The Everlasting Picnic” is a short animation that uses a range of simple yet charming analogies to engage the client’s (The Little Food Festival) younger audience (5-12 year old children) when learning about the food system in a positive way.

Analogies such as the food system being like their “favourite sandwich” and an “everlasting picnic cycle” where the viewer is a “magician” or “superhero” enables the information presented to be more easily consumed as they may struggle to grasp the concept of the food system due to their young age.

To create a more approachable and natural illustration style, all illustrations were hand drawn on Procreate before being animated on After Effects.

I focused on using a variety of colours that were varied in vibrancy to emphasise certain components and to attract younger viewers who are likely to be fascinated and entertained by these design choices. I also decided to include different shaped and coloured animal characters to not only anthropomorphize (which helps children make sense of their environment), but to represent diversity without potentially contributing to harmful stereotypes.

Together, these visual strategies helped to produce an illustration style that was welcoming, inclusive, and non-intimidating for younger viewers to watch and learn about the food system and why/how we can transform it.
