2023 | Publication | Supervised by Matt Curry

Springvale can best be described as a place of “organised chaos”. To communicate this authentic, busy, and chaotic yet systemic culture of Springvale, my publication is designed to feel almost overwhelming, cluttered, and yet still structured and logical in its layout and colour palette.

Various patterns and repeating traditional cultural motifs are scattered across different spreads to reinforce the feeling of cohesive disorder, a contradiction that is also illustrated in the alternating colours that contrast eachother throughout the publication. The decision to use primarily red, yellow and green was to incorporate the traditional colours that hold significance in particularly Vietnamese and Chinese cultures, which have many meanings and represent luck, happiness, prosperity, etc.

The worn out underlying feeling of Springvale physically seen in the cracks and tears in tiles, walls and ceilings was also a quality I wanted to highlight and illustrate in my publication, subtly hidden in the grainy shadows and imperfect luminance of text, frames, patterns, and images. A rougher and non-glossy paper texture was also deliberately chosen to accentuate this raw, authentic, and “worn out” characteristic of Springvale.
